The Phoenix that will Rise from the Ashes of Facebook, Twitter et al

With the internet evolving rapidly it’s a good idea to think about how people will use domain names in the future. It’s foreseeable that social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter will rise and fall. It is after all the common course for these type of sites which are flavour of the month.

Already we have people using their firstnamelastnamce.tld to redirect to their Facebook or business page. But what is the next step in the evolving web?

Surely there will come a time when redirecting someone to your Facebook becomes bedraggled, not cool, unprofessional. Then the next link in the chain must be development of personal websites. Will people put the effort in to developing their own websites? Perhpaps content management systems will improve to the point where everybody and anybody could produce a decent website.

If this occurs within the next 10 years, and the structure of the internet and domain names remain the same, domainers of 2009 have every chance of emulating the smart domain investors of the 1990′s.
